Matt Moulson is returning to Buffalo after signing a five-year, $25 million contract and right winger Brian Gionta also is headed to the Sabres.

The Sabres signed Gionta, a former Montreal Canadiens captain, to a three-year contract valued at $4.25 million, The Buffalo News reported Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Gionta, a former U.S. Olympian who completed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Canadiens, had 18 goals and 40 points in 81 regular-season games last season for the Habs. He has 249 goals and 485 points in 776 NHL games, including a career-best 48 goals and 89 points in 2005-06 with the New Jersey Devils.

Moulson began last season with the New York Islanders before he was traded to the Sabres and then to the Minnesota Wild.

He finished the regular season with 23 goals, including 11 for the Sabres in 44 games.

"I think they have a clear direction to where this team wants to go," Moulson told TSN. "I love the guys, the staff there. Teddy Nolan is an unbelievable coach.

"There's a bright future for this team, and I'm excited to be there."

The Sabres also picked up defenseman Josh Gorges from the Canadiens in a trade for a second-round draft pick in 2016.
