Ryan says Sanchez still Jets' QB
The heat is turning up on Mark Sanchez, but head coach Rex Ryan said he will remain the New York Jets' starting quarterback.
Sanchez completed just 13 of 29 passes for 103 yards while throwing an interception with no touchdowns in Sunday's 34-0 loss at home to the San Francisco 49ers. He also lost a fumble late in the first half when the Jets were in field-goal range.
"I'm not ready to make a quarterback change," Ryan said after the game. "We have to get better play at quarterback. We have to get better at a lot of things. You look at yourself first, and there are things that clearly we all need to do."
Sanchez said after the game that he's not concerned about his job security.
Tim Tebow has seen limited action in the Wildcat package through four games. He had two carries for no yards and completed his only pass attempt for nine yards against the 49ers.
Second-year pro Greg McElroy has been inactive for every game this season.
When asked why he won't consider making a quarterback change, Ryan said, "I don't think that's the answer. Again, time will tell."
Sunday marked the third consecutive game in which Sanchez's completion percentage was below 50.
"I think a lot of it has to do with the kind of duress he's under," Ryan said. "When he can set his feet, he can make those throws.
"Now, he missed some today, (he) hasn't been as accurate as he's been in the past, but it's something that we clearly have to get better at.
"We have to take what we do on the practice field (and) bring it over to the game field. We weren't great this week at throwing the football on the practice field."
