Ryan Pemberton has joined JR Motorsports and is rumored to become the next competition director for the team. If he takes over this role, he will be replacing Tony Eury Sr. who was fired recently. Pemberton may be another example of the steps that JR Motorsports is willing to take to improve in 2013.
JR Motorsports Makes Changes
Ryan Pemberton's new position with JR Motorsports has not been defined. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr. stated, "He's going to help Kelley with some ideas on what direction we can go in to get better." Kelley Earnhardt Miller is the general manager of the team and Dale's sister. She is also a co-owner of JR Motorsports and played a part in the decision to let go of Tony Eury Sr.
Ryan Pemberton's Connections in NASCAR
Robin Pemberton, who is Ryan's brother, is the current NASCAR vice president for competition. Both siblings have experience as crew chiefs. Although Ryan Pemberton began his career at Roush Racing, he has worked for multiple teams including Red Bull Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Tommy Baldwin Racing and others.
In Feb. 2012, Ryan Pemberton was hired by Tommy Baldwin Racing. As the new crew chief, he has not garnered a great deal of media attention, but he is considered a reliable part of the team. During his career, Pemberton has been a part of 15 poles and 2 wins as crew chief.
JR Motorsports Prepares for 2013
The changes at JR Motorsports indicate that the team is taking its preparations for 2013 seriously. Firing Tony Eury Sr., who is Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s uncle, seems to have allowed for the addition of Ryan Pemberton. Although his role has not been defined, he is expected to take over Eury's position. JR Motorsports has been a family business for years, but it is finally willing to make drastic adjustments.
The team has a total of 9 Nationwide Series wins, but JR Motorsports has not won any races in 2012 or 2011. In addition, Danica Patrick's decision to move to the Sprint Cup in 2013 means that the GoDaddy.com sponsorship that has been with JR will also leave. The team seems to believe that trying new leadership will improve the next season.
