Recommendation: Mathews' injuries don't appear to be serious, and although he was present at camp, extra caution was made to assure the health of San Diego's top back. Mathews has dealt with injuries in the past, missing six games in his first two seasons. After Mike Tolbert departed earlier this offseason, Mathews inherited a full workload in San Diego, and should be in great position to perform as long as he avoids further injury. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be involved in the accident, preventing any possibility for future suspension. Mathews should remain a high draft pick as long as no further complications from this accident arise.
