Update: Madson will require Tommy John surgery to repair a torn elbow ligament and will miss the entire 2012 season, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.
Recommendation: This is terrible news for the Reds, and even worse for Madson, who was unable to secure a guaranteed multi-year deal this offseason. He will miss all of this year, and depending on the length of his recovery, could miss some of next year as well. If the Reds opt to stay in-house to replace Madson, consider Sean Marshall, Nick Masset, and Aroldis Chapman all candidates to fill the vacant ninth-inning role.
