Despite committing what he called "age-grouper" mistakes, Ryan Lochte has qualified to swim the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2013 FINA World Championships.
Despite the quick time, Lochte wasn't exactly happy with his technical performance during the race, he said.
"I knew I was capable of going that time," Lochte said after the race. "I messed up a lot of places in that race. … I came off (the turn) like an age-grouper … instead of in a streamline. My start was slow."
Lochte said the turn was so bad that Ricky Berens, who swam in the lane next to him, commented on it after the race.
"I even had Ricky, he was like 'Did you mess up that turn?' I was like, 'You saw that too?' So I mean, I have two more weeks to fix it and get ready for that relay," Lochte said after the swim.
The top six finishers qualified to participate in the relay at the world championships in August. Olympians Berens and Matt Grevers rounded out the top six.
Despite his technical difficulties, Lochte said he was happy with the overall time and he was impressed with his own ability to get out fast and sprint to the finish.
"I think that's the first time I actually went out with the field," Lochte said. "Usually I'm like dead last, so I had a little sprinter in me today."
Though Lochte has been in the relay in the past, the 100 freestyle is one of the newer events on his schedule, as he has traditionally been successful in events 200 meters and longer. The change may signal his wish to move toward shorter races as he gets older. Lochte has said in the past that he'll likely drop some of the longer and more grueling events from his schedule in an effort to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games.
