Ryan: Jets, Tebow were not a fit

The SportsXchange

Maybe bringing Tim Tebow to New York wasn't such a good idea after all, Jets coach Rex Ryan now acknowledges.

The Jets decided the lightning-rod quarterback didn't have a future with the team and released him after the NFL Draft concluded last weekend, .

"When you look at it with the advantage of hindsight, obviously it wasn't a good situation for Tim," Ryan said on ESPN Radio. "It wasn't a good situation for the Jets or anything else.

"I looked at it like he would have had success and we were going to use him in a multiple of ways. Unfortunately, that didn't happen ... We really didn't take advantage, in my opinion, of his skill set. That's nobody's fault. Ultimately, it's my fault."

After the Jets acquired Tebow in a trade with the Denver Broncos last year, they envisioned him contributing in multiple ways to the offense. But the situation never panned out. He ended up completing 6 of 8 passes for 39 yards and ran 32 times for 102 yards in 12 games.

Late in the season, Ryan bypassed Tebow when he benched starter Mark Sanchez to go with third-stringer Greg McElroy. Then when McElroy was injured, Ryan turned back to Sanchez instead of Tebow.

Now, the experiment is over. The Jets have five quarterbacks on their roster and Tebow is not one of them. He has yet to find any takers around the NF for his servicesL.
