Rutgers 67, Pittsburgh 62

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Eli Carter scored 23 points to help Rutgers upset No. 24 Pitt, 67-62, on Saturday at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Myles Mack added 11 points for the Scarlet Knights (10-3, 1-1 in the Big East), who dropped their conference opener at Syracuse on Wednesday night.

Pitt (12-3, 0-2) will stay on the road and play at No. 15 Georgetown Tuesday night.

J.J. Moore led the Panthers with 14 points.

Trailing, 39-25, at halftime, Pitt scored the first nine points of the second half to cut the lead to five. Rutgers turned the ball over five times in the first four minutes of the second half to allow the Panthers to climb back into the game.

The Panthers cut the lead to three points on Lamar Patterson's layup with 8:06 remaining and to two points twice in the final 4:23, but a turnover and missed shots did them in.

Rutgers was able to make some big shots down the stretch, including Carter's drive with 2:53 remaining that gave the Scarlet Knights a 57-53 lead.

Rutgers put on a sizzling shooting display in the first half. The Scarlet Knights shot 58 percent from the field and made 6-of-10 shots from 3-point range.

Carter scored 14 of his points in the first 20 minutes. He was 5-for-9 from the field and made two 3-pointers. Mack also made two 3-pointers and scored nine points in the first half.

The Scarlet Knights made their first six shots from the field and jumped out to a 19-5 lead. The Panthers used a 13-5 run to cut the deficit to six on Tray Woodall's 3-pointer, but Rutgers finished the half on a 15-7 run to take a 14-point lead into the locker room.

Pitt shot 32 percent in the first half. Moore led the Panthers with 10 first-half points.

NOTES: Pitt had won six consecutive games at Rutgers, last losing at Piscataway in 2001. ... Rutgers has defeated four of the last six nationally ranked teams it had faced. ... The Scarlet Knights improved to 7-11 in Big East home openers. They had not won a home conference opener since beating Seton Hall in the 2005-06 season. ... Eli Carter did not start for the fourth time this season.
