Lions re-sign OT Hilliard

Lions GM Martin Mayhew has made it clear that the club won’t be counting upon RB Jahvid Best to be cleared to return from concussion issues that have kept him off the field since 2011. At his end-of-season press conference, Mayhew indicated the team would be looking for a quick running back in the offseason.

The Lions already have the makings of solid RB depth. The Lions have a clear No. 1 power back in Mikel Leshoure, and reserve Joique Bell also has some strength and bulk, too. Both figure to be in the RB rotation next season. Bell’s receiving ability adds to his value, and he has shown he can contribute on passing downs. What’s more, he had the only three rushes of more than 20 yards by a Lions back this season.

A change-of-pace back is one of the bigger needs for an offense that looks relatively stable compared to a defense that has at least one key free agent at defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, cornerback and safety.
