New rumors have been circulating about former MLS player Bakary Soumare. The defender is currently on loan to Karlsruher SC for the rest of the 2012 season, but there have been rumors that he is considering a return to Major League Soccer. Soumare recently suffered a knee injury that required surgery, and there has been limited information on his recovery.
MLS and the Chicago Fire
Bakary Soumare began his MLS career with the Chicago Fire in 2007 and was nominated for MLS Defender of the Year in 2008. As a defender on the team, Soumare made progress by becoming an important center back and an asset to the entire defensive line.
The Fight That Changed His Career
Soumare's time with the Chicago Fire was marred by a fight with coach Denis Hamlett. The argument occurred in the locker room on Aug. 9, 2009. Details about the event have varied while the team has insisted that there was no physical violence. Bakary Soumare was removed from the game and did not play after this incident.
MLS later fined both Soumare and Hamlett an undisclosed amount of money. The fight has been cited as the main reason for Soumare's departure from the Chicago Fire. He transferred to France's US Boulogne club in 2009 and received a contract for four years.
Current Team and Connections
Bakary Soumare technically still has a year left in his contract with US Boulogne. However, he is currently on loan to Germany's Karlsruher SC. He has a total of six appearances with the team this year. In March 2012, Karlsruher SC revealed that Soumare injured his knee and required meniscus surgery.
At the age of 26, Soumare seems to have matured and may have gained a new perspective on his future. It appears that his experience in Europe may not be what he expected. It is not clear if he will return to the MLS, but the Chicago Fire may welcome him back. He still has connections to the city and continues to visit Chicago. Unfortunately, his availability for the team will depend on the MLS allocation order.
