Rumor: The San Francisco Giants Eye Up the Minnesota Twins' Bullpen

The Giants Are Looking for Arms for the Stretch Run, and the Twins May Have the Assets to Strike a Deal

COMMENTARY | With the July 31 trade deadline approaching, the Minnesota Twins may have a suitor for several of their bullpen arms.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted on July 1 that the San Francisco Giants had sent several scouts to the Twins' game against the New York Yankees to check out the team's bullpen instead of Joba Chamberlain, who had been mentioned earlier in the day by the New York Post.

It can be assumed that the Giants are most interested in acquiring the Twins' closer Glen Perkins, but with the lefty unlikely to be dealt, there are several other pieces that could give the Twins another prospect in their rebuilding effort.

Schulman deemed right-hander Casey Fien to be the likely target for the Giants and it would seem to be a match. Fien is a native of Santa Rosa, California and has registered a 0.82 WHIP in 38 appearances heading into the July 2 game with the Yankees.

Perkins will be the name out of the bullpen that will be floated out the most between now and the end of the month, but if a team calls about a name like Fien, Jared Burton or Brian Duensing, the Twins must race to the phone to finalize the trade as soon as possible.

It doesn't seem like trading Fien would be a big deal, but Ryan has been known to turn nothing into something from his days in the late-90s by trading mediocre major leaguers for promising (but lesser-known) prospects such as David Ortiz and Joe Mays that helped the team's rebirth several seasons later.

With a team that's geared for the future, a minor trade seems to be a good place to start.
