Redshirt sophomore Jake Rudock was named Iowa's starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes' opener against Northern Illinois.
Coach Kirk Ferentz made the announcement Friday after Rudock beat out Cody Sokol and C.J. Beathard for the starting job.
"All three returning quarterbacks have competed well and improved in each phase of our preseason camp," Ferentz said on Iowa's official Twitter account. "We plan to start Jake in our season opener, and we are all confident he will do a quality job."
Rudock was the backup to James Vandenberg last season, but none of the three quarterbacks who competed for the starting job has any game experience.
Vandenberg took every snap for the Hawkeyes last season, when the Hawkeyes went 4-8 overall, including 2-6 in the Big Ten.
