Royals-Yankees finale rained out

The SportsXchange

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The chance for a Kansas City Royals franchise first -- winning three of four in a home series against the New York Yankees -- was erased due to the elements.

The series finale was rained out Monday night at Kauffman Stadium. The game will be made up Aug. 25, which would have been an off day for both teams.

"When you're playing well, you don't like rainouts, but there are benefits to it, too," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said.

He mentioned catcher Salvador Perez, second baseman Omar Infante and left fielder Alex Gordon, who started each of the team's first 63 games, getting a needed day off.

"There are pros and cons to it," Yost said.

The Royals and Yankees both announced they would move back their starters one day in the rotation.

Kansas City left-hander Jason Vargas, who has a 1.77 ERA in his past three starts, will start the series opener Tuesday against the Indians. Right-hander Corey Kluber is Cleveland's probable starter.

Yankees rookie left-hander Vidal Nuno, who is 0-2 in five starts since a May 7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, will start Tuesday at Seattle against Mariners right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma.

While the Royals are heating up, winning seven of 11, the Yankees are going the other direction, losing six of eight to fall to .500 (31-31).

After New York took the series opener 4-2 Friday, Kansas City earned an 8-4 win Saturday and a 2-1 victory Sunday.

The Aug. 25 makeup date comes a day after the Royals complete a nine-game road trip, and it adds a 10th game to the ensuing homestand.

The Yankees will kick off a seven-game road trip with the one-day return to Kansas City. After the makeup game at Kauffman Stadium, New York will play the Tigers in Detroit the following evening.

NOTES: Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury was not in the posted lineup Monday after tweaking his hip running the bases Sunday. Ellsbury said he could have played, and he expects to be in the lineup Tuesday. ... The Royals recalled LHP Donnie Joseph from Triple-A Omaha after the game was rained out and optioned rookie RHP Wilking Rodriguez to the Pacific Coast League farm club. Yost said he wanted another lefty in the bullpen for the series against the Indians, who are a predominantly left-handed club. ... Royals RHP Wade Davis has not allowed an extra-base hit this season, covering 25 appearances and 28 1/3 innings.
