Royals release RHP Penny

The SportsXchange

The Kansas City Royals released right-hander Brad Penny from his minor league contract on Friday.

Penny, 35, allowed four runs and eight hits in two innings Thursday against the Chicago White Sox. He has surrendered 13 hits over four innings with a 15.75 ERA in two spring training appearances.

Penny was out last season and went 0-1 with a 6.11 ERA for the San Francisco Giants in 2012. He is 119-100 record with a 4.26 ERA in 13 major league seasons. He was an All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 and 2007.

The Royals signed Penny in January. He would have earned a $1 million salary for the year if he made the club's major-league roster.
