With three female MMA bouts scheduled for "Strikeforce: Rousey vs Kaufman" on August 18th, there's a lot to discuss in the world of women fighters. Whether you're a fan or not, training continues, experience is building--and one day--according to UFC President, Dana White, there will be a super fight between two female fighters (one of them could be Ronda Rousey) scheduled on a UFC card.
Dana White is planning to attend "Strikeforce: Rousey vs Kaufman"
Dana White is a Ronda Rousey fan. Recently, he wore a t-shirt, emblazoned with her "ESPN the Body Issue", cover photo, to the weigh-ins for "UFC on Fox 4".
Current Strikeforce champion, Ronda Rousey (5-0) defends her belt for the first time against former Strikeforce champion, Sarah Kaufman (15-1). Ronda is the verbal one and Sarah is the quieter one. But once the cage door closes, words won't count. This time, Ronda's opponent, will severely test her striking defensive moves. Sarah is a dangerous striker. Her straight one-two punches made a mess of her last opponent's face (Alexis Davis).
Can Ronda handle a vicious striker?
I just read a fascinating interview on MMAJunkie about famous female boxer, Lucia Rijker. Yes, she's an attractive woman, but what's more interesting than that, is her power and skill as a boxer. Turns out, Lucia has been training with Ronda to help prepare her to defend against Sarah's striking.
Ronda's manager, Darin Harvey, tweeted a photo, "@RondaRousey and [boxing] legend, Lucia Rijker showing their muscle pic.twitter.com/MxsJZMek ".
Yes, it takes time to develop as a striker. No, fans haven't seen Ronda strike much because she finishes her opponents in the first round. But, anyone who's trained with top-notch UFC fighters or high level, boxing coaches has had the opportunity to learn the short-cut, super-moves that interrupt and dismantle offensive moves from experienced fighters.
From MMAJunkie, "She's very dominant, and she leads with her head, and she has some good right hands and some strikes," Rijker said of Kaufman. "But to be able to hit someone, you've got to be right in front of them. So, there's a lot of ways to avoid that--or eliminate that--and that's what we're working on."
Who knows what this mix of minds has created...hopefully for Ronda (and for fans expecting an exciting fight), she's come up with something Sarah's never seen before.
Has Ronda had time to drill the new moves often enough (as in, one thousand times) to be able to instinctively deliver the right move at the right time? Can Ronda take a punch, shake it off and keep on going?
Sarah Kaufman intends to find out.
What a treat seeing a young Freddie Roach training Lucia in this 2.5 minute video (the full length version of "Shadow Boxers" is available on YouTube).
It's my party and I'll cry if I want to...
Meanwhile, Cris "Cyborg" Santos is looking to get back in the mix. But, she says she can't make 135.
On the MMAHour with Ariel Helwani, Cyborg suggested that fighters agree to a catch weight of 140. Her opinion is that anyone who doesn't is "dodging" her. I'd say that too, if I didn't feel like making a difficult weight cut.
I'm thinking that kind of taunting won't work on Ronda. Ronda's cuddly, but athletic "fat chick at 145" days are over.
All the attention is on the 135 division. I don't know how she's going to do it, but Cyborg needs to figure out how to get down to 135.
Bobby Razak, founder of TapouT films, has created a sick, new video featuring Sarah Kaufman and Cyborg.
Cyborg is shown getting emotional when talking about being separated from her husband and being caught doping. Check out it out (around 2:40 minutes), " Street Made Sessions: Sarah Kaufman & Cris Cyborg" video
...You would cry too, if it happened to you
On the same MMAHour show, former Strikeforce champion, Miesha Tate lamented her current status on the Strikeforce: Rousey vs Kaufman card.
NewYorkRic, who engineers the technical details for Ariel Helwani's MMAHour (which usually lasts more than an hour...just saying) tweeted Miesha's comment, "I think being main event of the undercard is lame!"
Gu-rrrl, show some appreciation for your employer.
Tate (12-3) faces veteran, Julie Kedzie (16-10), who trains with Team Jackson in Albuquerque. Tate lost her title to Ronda Rousey in March.
At the same Strikeforce event on August 18, in the 145 division, Hiroko Yamanaka (12-1)-- last seen in a bout with Cris Cyborg, ruled no-contest due to doping--faces Germaine de Randamie (2-2).
