Roundup: Woman in hoax photo gets apology

The SportsXchange

Diane O'Meara, aka the woman whose photo was used on the Twitter account of Manti Te'o's supposed girlfriend, told NBC's "Today" show that she received an apology from the man behind the alleged hoax.

O'Meara said Tuesday that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo used pictures of her to create a woman named "Lennay Kekua." Te'o claims he was duped into an online romance with Kekua and believed she died of leukemia in September until Deadspin broke a story last week.

O'Meara and Tuiasosopo were high-school classmates in California, but O'Meara told 'Today' that they weren't close. She said she received an apology Jan. 16.

"I don't think there's anything he could say to me that would fix this," O'Meara said. She said she had never had any contact with Te'o, and added that, for five years, Tuiasosopo "has literally been stalking my Facebook and stealing my photos."

---Fans of disgraced Penn State football coach Joe Paterno are commemorating the one-year anniversary of his death with a candlelight vigil.

Paterno died of lung cancer on Jan. 22, 2012, at age 85. Supporters are holding a vigil at a mural in State College that includes a depiction of Paterno. A family spokesman has said the Paternos won't participate.

The plan is to light 409 candles, one for each of Paterno's record-setting win total, before 111 were vacated as part of NCAA sanctions in light of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.
