Rossi leaves Villarreal, signs new deal with Fiorentina

Italian national team forward and New Jersey native Giuseppe Rossi has completed a transfer from Spanish side Villarreal to Serie A club Fiorentina for a reported $12.45 million transfer fee.

Rossi, who has been out of action for 14 months since tearing the ACL in his right knee during a game against Real Madrid in October of 2011, signed a four-year deal with his new club worth slightly more than $2.6 million per season, plus bonuses.

Rossi, 25, joined Villarreal in 2007 after he began his career with Manchester United. After originally tearing his ACL in 2011, he tore the same ligament last spring and underwent a second operation in April, and has not played for his club or the Italian national team since.

Rossi, who moved from New Jersey to Parma, Italy at age 12 and famously spurned the US national team to play with Italy during his international career, has scored six goals in 27 appearances for the Azzurri since making his debut in 2008.
