We all know how brilliant a golfer he is, but Rory McIlroy may be motivated to play even better golf this weekend because his girlfriend is at the tournament watching. McIlroy shared the lead with Thomas Bjorn after the second round of play at the Dubai Desert Classic on February 10, 2012.
McIlroy kept his cool all day, saying he never really felt any pressure. Perhaps this was due to the presence of his girlfriend, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. She just so happened to be in town to play in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, so she stopped by to watch McIlroy on the course.
This makes the third tournament that Wozniacki has attended to watch McIlroy play, and he says it has been very nice. So maybe that's why he was able to keep his cool all day, and sink seven birdies. Now he is down to 13-under, one stroke ahead of yesterday's leader, Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
The close race doesn't stop there either, with many golfers still very close to lead. Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood are right there within striking distance, just waiting for the opportunity to move up.
As far as my man John Daly is concerned, he may not be at the top of the leader board, but he is not out. He shot a 72 in the second round, taking him to one-under. So a win in Dubai this time around may be out of his reach, but he is always good for a funny comment via twitter. Today Daly posted, "Unplayable on 12 put a nice Snowman on my card---I'm blaming the Groundhog for that one! But, made the cut & playin the weekend!"
It's going to be exciting to follow what happens in this tournament closely. There are ten golfers or more who could walk away with this victory. My prediction for who will win the Dubai Desert Classic has to be Rory McIlroy. He was the 2009 champion, and he certainly has what it takes to win again.
After all, who doesn't do better when they are trying to impress their girlfriend?
Elias Bond grew up playing golf, and played religiously through high school and college. He still tries to find time to get out there for a round or two now and again, but seems to watch more than play these days.
