Rookie tackles settling in for Cardinals

Get used to rookie tackles starting for the Cardinals the rest of the season — for better or worse.

Say hello to seventh-round draft pick Nate Potter, who replaced journeyman D’Anthony Batiste at left tackle in the Week Nine defeat in Green Bay and more than held his own along with fellow rookie ORT Bobby Massie, as the Cardinals allowed only two sacks.

The massive 6-6, 316-pound Massie, who has struggled more often than not, is the only Cardinals rookie to start every game this season.

“Things could change if either of them really struggles, but it looks like the Cardinals are committed to them going forward,” one team insider said. “They were really happy with the way Potter played against the Packers, giving up only one pressure. It certainly helped that (Packers ROLB and leading sacker) Clay Matthews was out much of the game with a hamstring injury, but Potter was impressive. And Massie was better than he has been.

“But growing pains are expected to continue for both of them.”

The consensus in the desert seems to be that Potter will be a lot better off once he fully grows into his body.

“He’s just as tall as Massie, but he’s under 300 pounds,” the insider said of the 6-5, 295-pound Potter, whose three years of starting experience at Boise State is considered a strong positive in his favor. “They want him stronger. He got overpowered in the preseason, and he knows he needs to beef up.”
