Rookie Massie shaping up as Cardinals' starting ORT

It certainly seems like fourth-round rookie Bobby Massie has an excellent shot at becoming the Cardinals’ new starting right tackle. “I think so,” said one team insider of the 6-6, 316-pounder, who excelled as the starting right tackle his last three seasons at Ole Miss. “He was where they thought he would be (in the fourth round), and they think he might benefit from having a chip on his shoulder after being drafted so low. He’s very athletic, has perfect size and held up very well against elite competition in the SEC. When you look at his competition at right tackle (veterans Jeremy Bridges and D’Anthony Batiste), I think they like both guys, but more as backups.”

After making Massie the team’s highest-drafted lineman since Levi Brown in 2007, the Cardinals added two more badly needed blockers in the fifth (OG Senio Kelemete) and seventh (OT Nate Potter) rounds. “They’re obviously both more developmental guys,” the insider said. “Kelemete looks like the kind of compact, mobile guard who can pull that the Cardinals have liked over the years. Potter is solid and smart.”

A key will be the tutelage all three of the new linemen receive from assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm, who hasn’t really developed too many linemen in recent years. “The evidence the last five years or so isn’t great,” the insider said of Grimm’s track record. “In his defense, they really haven’t given him a lot of resources. The team has also passed the ball a lot more than he ever expected. Russ’ lines are a lot more run-oriented. How Massie develops under Grimm will be key. The only real success story on the line to speak of is (C Lyle) Sendlein, who has become a very solid player.”
