EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Rogers Communications has bought the naming rights to the future home of the Edmonton Oilers, expanding its already wide reach in Canadian professional sports.
The telecommunications giant said in a statement Tuesday the downtown arena that is set to open in 2016 will be called Rogers Place. The announcement follows a 12-year, $5.2 billion media rights agreement between Rogers and the NHL.
Rogers owns the Blue Jays and with rival Bell is part owner of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, whose properties include the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, the NBA's Toronto Raptors and MLS's Toronto FC.
