Rodriguez's appeal process gets under way this week

Alex Rodriguez's appeal of the 211-game suspension levied on him by Major League Baseball will take the next step this week when a status conference takes place between the New York Yankees third baseman's attorneys, MLB officials and arbitrator Frederic Horowitz.

The status conference, according to Newsday, could take place on Wednesday at an undisclosed location and will focus on the discovery of evidence. The conference also will give the parties involved an opportunity to set dates for the appeals hearing, which is not expected to take place until November or December.

Rodriguez was suspended along with 12 other players in connection with MLB's investigation of performance-enhancing drugs distributed by the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic. The other 12 players accepted their 50-game suspensions and are serving their punishment.

Rodriguez will be allowed to play until Horowitz rules on his appeal. Horowitz could uphold the suspension, overturn it or reduce the number of games Rodriguez will be suspended, the Daily News reported.
