Rodriguez to join Yankees for opening day

The SportsXchange

New York third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be with the team on Monday for opening day ceremonies when the Yankees and Boston Red Sox kick off their seasons.

This will be the first time Rodriguez has been with the team since Game 4 of last year's American League Championship Series loss to Detroit and his first time back at Yankee Stadium since Game 2 of that series.

Rodriguez had a tumultuous offseason having hip surgery and being linked to the performance-enhancing drug investigation and the Biogenesis clinic in Florida.

Manager Joe Girardi expects Rodriguez to take part in pregame ceremonies.

"I haven't asked but I don't see why he wouldn't necessarily do it," Girardi told the New York Post. "I don't know what the expectations are but he is part of our team and I am looking forward to seeing him."

Rodriguez had arthroscopic surgery in December for a torn labrum, a bone impingement and a cyst. He is expected to rejoin the team during the second half of the season. He has been rehabbing in New York and was not in Tampa Bay for spring training.

In December, Rodriguez was alleged in a Miami New Time article to have purchased human growth hormone and other performance-enhancing drugs from Biogenesis -- the South Florida clinic under investigation by Major League Baseball of America. He denied involvement with Biogenisis.
