Rodriguez injured but will report to Yankees
New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will return to the team Monday despite being held out of his final minor league rehab game with a quad injury.
The New York Post reported Sunday that Rodriguez will work out for the team's coaching staff and trainers to determine if he will be activated for Monday's game against the Texas Rangers.
The injury is not considered serious. However, he will have an MRI, making his return to the Yankees lineup on Monday less likely, according to CBS Sports.
Rodriguez was scheduled to play with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but was pulled from the lineup because of the injury. It also limited him to designated hitter duties Saturday.
He sustained the injury Friday while sliding into second base.
"I didn't think it was that bad," Rodriguez said after Saturday's game. "They all know. We called them right before the game and told them we would be DH-ing today and they said, 'Do whatever you need to do, as long as you get up here.' "
Rodriguez, 37, is 8-for-40 in 13 minor league rehab games in coming back from offseason hip surgery.
Without Rodriguez, the Yankees are the least productive team in the major leagues at third base. Seven different starting third basemen have combined to bat .223 with a .287 on-base percentage and just four home runs.
