BOSTON (AP) -- New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez has left Sunday night's game against the Boston Red Sox because of a tight right calf.

Vernon Wells pinch hit for Rodriguez in the fifth inning.

Rodriguez was 1 for 2 with a single in the game, which is the Yankees' last in Boston this year.

New York entered the night trailing AL wild-card leaders Oakland and Texas by 2 1/2 games.

Rodriguez was on the disabled list until Aug. 5 recovering from left hip surgery. He is batting .280 with six homers in 35 games.
