Robidas fractures right leg again

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Stephane Robidas fractured his right leg Monday in the second period of the third game in the first-round playoff series with the Dallas Stars and is out for the postseason.

Robidas fractured the same leg Nov. 29 and had only returned to the ice in March.

"My heart just breaks for the guy," said Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler. "He worked so hard to come back and become a big part of this team, and then there's a freak accident and he goes down again. Really I'm just thinking about him and hoping that he's doing OK. He was a big part of this team and was going to continue to play a huge role for us. It's a pretty big loss."

Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau described the loss as "huge." The former Dallas Stars defenseman, who was tied up with Ryan Garbutt in front of the net 42 seconds into the second period, could not put weight on his leg. The sellout crowd at American Airlines Arena, in a party mood as Dallas was in the postseason for the first time since 2008, turned somber before rising to send Robidas to the locker room with an ovation and thunderous chants of "Robi, Robi, Robi."

"He was playing great," Boudreau said. "And of course, I think all the guys on the bench felt extremely bad for him. Here's your teammate who's just fought his way back from a broken leg."

Luca Sbisa and former Dallas Stars defender Mark Fistric are the leading candidates to fill Robidas' spot in the Anaheim lineup.

"I don't know what the extent of the injury is. I know it doesn't look good and he's probably out for a long time, but it looked like the same leg and everything to me. You have to feel for an athlete that worked so hard to get back and then that same thing happens to him."
