Roberts homers in Rays debut

Ryan Roberts certainly made a good impression on his new Tampa Bay Rays teammates.

After arriving in the Camden Yards visitors' clubhouse around 5 p.m., Roberts started at third base in his Rays debut, homering and reaching base two other times in Tampa Bay's 10-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

"I just wanted to come over and blend in and do my part," Roberts said.

The Rays plan to use Roberts at third and second base, and they say he can also "dabble" at shortstop.

Plus, Roberts is a high-energy player nicknamed "Tatman" for all his tattoos.

"He's a very interesting player," manager Joe Maddon said. "I think he definitely fits into our culture."

Roberts was acquired late Tuesday from Arizona, where he had been designated for assignment. The Rays sent infield prospect Tyler Bortnick to the Diamondbacks for Roberts, who was hitting .250 with a .306 on-base percentage, a .357 slugging percentage, six homers and 34 RBI in 83 games with Arizona.
