Robert Griffin III to start for winless Browns vs. Bengals

The Cleveland Browns and first-year head coach Hue Jackson signed Robert Griffin III this offseason, a chance for Griffin to reclaim his career under the tutelage of Jackson, who is known for his work with quarterbacks.

But Griffin was injured in just the first game of the year, suffering a fractured coracoid bone in his left shoulder that landed him on injured reserve. He returned to practice on Nov. 23, just over 10 weeks after sustaining the injury.

He’ll return to the field on Sunday, starting the Browns’ home game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Browns tweeted the news on Thursday morning.

Once Griffin went down, the Browns turned to Josh McCown – who also got hurt, necessitating a switch to rookie Cody Kessler. In all, the Browns have played five quarterbacks this season, with Charlie Whitehurst and Kevin Hogan also taking snaps in injury relief.

Griffin was 12-for-26 for 190 yards and an interception in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
