After an unfortunate series of lay days, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal finally got underway on Saturday, October 13, 2012. And what a start it was! The men were greeted with waves in the three to five foot range and blue skies. They went on to utilize those conditions to deliver an incredible display of panache, skill and stunning rides. Here's a quick look at some of the results:
Round 1 Results
During Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, fans bore witness to two idyllic 10 point rides. The first pristine ride was produced by Gabriel Medina (BRA) in Heat 9. He flew out of a tube like an acrobat out of a cannon. The second flawless ride was served up by C.J. Hobgood (USA) in Heat 11. It was a lightning fast tube ride that featured a sweet highline pump.
Heat 12 also proved to be an exciting matchup. It featured Julian Wilson (AUS), Tiago Pires (PRT) and Adrian Buchan (AUS). Julian Wilson opened up the surf heat by posting a 9.20 point ride. Tiago Pires quickly answered back by firing off a 9.77 point ride. In the end, Julian Wilson won the heat with 15.53 points.
Round 2 Results
When it came to rousing displays of surf supremacy, Round 2 also had its fair share of knockout moments. Mick Fanning (AUS) kicked off the round with a blistering 9.50 point ride in Heat 1. It featured a righteous roundhouse.
It was followed by an incredible Heat 4 matchup between Adrian Buchan (AUS) and Patrick Gudauskas (USA). During the heat, each man fired off a stunner. Patrick Gudauskas' best wave was a 9.33 point ride. During the ride, he grabbed the rail, delivered a sweet backhand whip and stomped the landing. Adrian Buchan's best ride featured awesome rail work. His efforts earned him 9.67 points.
Although the round's initial heats were noteworthy, the crème de la crème didn't come until Michel Bourez's (PYF) Heat 5 matchup against Jadson Andre (BRA). Bourez produced a faultless 10 point ride. It featured a late takeoff and ended in an aerial.
