With the buildup to Sunday’s clasico nacional between Chivas and America in full swing, Aguilas sporting director Ricardo Pelaez has stirred the pot further by claiming that his side has the better set of fans.
“Of course America (fans are the best),” said Pelaez, who played for both America and Chivas. “There’s a lot of pressure but we have to demonstrate on the field that we are better.”
Pelaez also took the opportunity to send a message to Chivas and deliver a prediction for Mexico’s most important match.
“I’ve heard that the Chivas president says they will win 2-0, but I’m saying that we’ll defeat them 3-0,” he said. “The game is heating up with a lot of things but as long as it is in favor of a good show and zero violence (it is fine).”
America had seven players away on international duty during the week, but all are now back in Mexico City in preparation for the clasico.
One of those, Ecuadoran striker Christian Benitez, headed straight for the dressing room without shaking hands with his compatriot Narciso Mina after being substituted out of the last America game against San Luis, but Pelaez assured fans he is the right frame of mind for the Chivas showdown.
“They are things that I like to deal with in private; of course the ideal thing is to shake your teammates hand,” stated Pelaez. “We talked about it with ‘Chucho,’ he’s arrived motivated, he scored a goal, (Ecuador) won, he’s happy and aware that the important thing is the group.”
