KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) -- Ifeanyi Onyekaba scored a double-double, 21 points and 10 rebounds in only 20 minutes of action, as Rhode Island overwhelmed Maine 97-77 Friday.
Onyekaba's layup started the scoring for the Rams as they jumped out to an early advantage, leading 16-9 with six minutes gone in the game. Maine, led by Xavier Pollard with 23 points, came charging back to tighten the score in the first half. The Black Bears closed to 21-19 on a Pollard layup at the midway point. That was as close as they could get as Rhode Island began to stretch the lead, going into the break with a 52-35 advantage. Rhode Island outscored Maine in the second half, 45-42, but it was more than enough.
Jarelle Reischel, Hassan Martin and Xavier Munford all scored in double digits for the Rams.
Dimitry Coronel had 18 points for Maine. Zarko Valjarevic contributed 10 points.
