Right Tackle, Wayne Howard, will not be playing in the New York Jets' third preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. Coach Rex Ryan made the decision to bench Wayne Hunter after reviewing the films from prior games. For now, Wayne Hunter has not shown he has what it takes to start. It is about time the Jets started making changes to the offense. Hunter is making too many mistakes.
New Right Tackle
NFL.com reports Austin Howard is replacing Wayne Hunter as the starter for the Carolina game. It makes sense for now, as Wayne Hunter is struggling with back issues and is not playing well. New York has to do something with the offense. If Howard is playing well, this should help prevent some of the sacks that seems to plague New York quarterbacks.
The End for Wayne Hunter
I would not look for the Jets to waive or trade Hunter in the first round of roster cuts. Dennis Waszak of the Associated Press tweeted " #Jets confirm that they have no intention of trading Wayne Hunter. Quite frankly, though, market probably very thin for him anyway. "
The Jets should hold onto Hunter. There is no guarantee the Austin Howard is the answer to the right tackle problem. With roster reductions on the horizon, New York must take a close look at who is available to beef up the offensive line.
About Austin Howard
Austin Howard is in his third year in the NFL. In 2010, Howard played four games with the Philadelphia Eagles. Both the Eagles and the Buffalo Bills cut Howard. He was on the Jets' roster in 2011 but did not play. Howard played in both preseason games this year.
This is a start for the New York Jets. They need to find a way for the offensive line to stop defensive players from getting to the quarterback. If changes are not made soon, Gang Green's quarterbacks will not survive the season.
