Reports: Young agrees to deal with Mets

The SportsXchange

Free-agent outfielder Chris Young agreed to a one-year, $7.25 million contract with the New York Mets, multiple media outlets reported Friday.

The deal is pending a physical scheduled for next week.

Young, 30, has a career batting average of .235 with 144 home runs over eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland A's. He was an All-Star with the Diamondbacks in 2010.

In 2013, he batted just .200 with 12 home runs in 107 games with the A's.

It is not clear what position Young will play. He has played 905 games in center field, 26 in right field and 24 games in left over his career.

The Mets hope 24-year-old Juan Lagares can be the everyday center fielder, which would push Young to a corner spot. Lagares batted just .242 this year.

The Boston Red Sox were also among the teams interested in Young.

The Mets were initially interested in free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz, but his salary demands were reportedly too high for them.
