The Chargers hired former Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt as their offensive coordinator, the team announced Thursday afternoon.
Whisenhunt will work with new head coach Mike McCoy, who was hired on Tuesday. Whisenhunt interviewed for the Chargers’ head-coaching job and reportedly would have been a serious consideration had the Broncos moved further in the playoffs, with McCoy as their offensive coordinator.
“Ken has a lot of experience and has had much success in the NFL in both Arizona and Pittsburgh,” said McCoy. “He has a very creative mind and will be a great asset for me and our team. I look forward to working with him.”
For the past six seasons, Whisenhunt coached the Cardinals, including to an NFC championship in 2008. Whisenhunt was the Steelers’ offensive coordinator for the three seasons prior to going to Arizona.
In his NFL coaching career, Whisenhunt has spent time with the Ravens, Browns and Jets, as well.
