Reports: Upton rejects deal with Mariners

The SportsXchange

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton used his veto power to nix a proposed trade with the Seattle Mariners, according to multiple reports Thursday.

Upton has a no-trade clause in his contract that allows him to reject deals with the Mariners, Toronto, Boston and the Chicago Cubs.

The reports indicated that the Mariners' package was "substantial." Fox Sports reported that Seattle offered four players in the deal.

Upton has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason. Arizona general manager Kevin Towers has listened to offers, but nothing has worked out so far. There are rumors that Texas, Baltimore, Atlanta and San Diego are among the teams who has shown interest.

A two-time All-Star, Upton finished the 2012 season with a .280 batting average, 17 home runs and 67 RBI.

The Diamondbacks appear willing to move Upton, 25, because they have a potential glut of outfielders after acquiring free-agent Cody Ross in a trade.
