Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was charged with murder hours after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend Thursday at his home in Silver Lakes, Pretoria.

Police received a call at 3 a.m. that there was a break-in and someone had been shot after being mistaken for a burglar.

The victim was confirmed to be 29-year-old South African model Reeva Steenkamp by her agency, Capacity Relations.

"There was a shooting this morning at the home of well-known Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorious," local police captain Sarah Mcira said. "The man was arrested and charged with murder."

Pistorius shot the woman in the head and the arm, and she died at the scene, according to local authorities.

Pistorius gained fame last year when he became the first double amputee to compete in an Olympic running event. Born without fibulas in both legs, Pistorius runs using prosthetic blades that some competitors complained gave him an advantage.

The 26-year-old reached the 400-meter semifinals in the London Olympics.

He won gold medals in the Paralympics in 2004, 2008 and 2012. At last year's Paralympics, also in London, he captured the 400-meter title and was part of South Africa's 4x100-meter relay team.
