Reports: Oregon's Kelly turns down Browns

The SportsXchange

Oregon coach Chip Kelly will not be the next Cleveland Browns coach, according to multiple reports.

ESPN reported that Kelly will not take the job and Sports Illustrated reported that Kelly will either focus on the Philadelphia Eagles job or return to Oregon.

After meeting with Kelly in Arizona, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner flew back to Cleveland without getting an answer from Kelly, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Eagles executives, who also met with Kelly in Arizona, left for Denver to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. The Eagles reportedly tried to sell Kelly on their offensive talent, including quarterbacks Michael Vick and Nick Foles.

NFL.com and ESPN reported that Nike founder Phil Knight, a major Oregon booster, is pushing hard to keep Kelly at Oregon.

Oregon could face NCAA sanctions as the school is being investigated for recruiting violations.

Last year, Kelly decided not to be considered for the Tama Bay Buccaneers job after the two sides started negotiating a deal.

The Browns also interviewed former Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt and Cards defensive coordinator Ray Horton.
