Reports: Oregon to promote Helfrich

The SportsXchange

The University of Oregon will promote offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich to replace Chip Kelly as head coach, according to multiple reports.

The move is expected to be announced Sunday, according to CBS Sports.

Helfrich has served as the Ducks' offensive coordinator since 2009, and was expected to be promoted when Kelly initially considered leaving for the NFL shortly after the Ducks won the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State on Jan. 3. Kelly appeared set to return to Oregon, however, before informing the school Wednesday that he had indeed decided to take the Philadelphia Eagles' head coaching job.

The school then posted a job opening for "Head Football Coach," and Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton interviewed for more than four hours this week. He has since been named the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis coach.

With Hamilton taking over, wide receivers coach Scott Frost will be promoted to offensive coordinator, according to a report by The Register-Guard.

Oregon finished second in the national with an average of 49.6 points per game in 2012 while averaging 537.4 yards of offense.
