Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken will be the next head coach at Southern Mississippi, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
Monken, 46, would replace Ellis Johnson, who was fired after just one season in which the Golden Eagles went 0-12.
Monken will not remain on the Cowboys staff for the Jan. 1 Heart of Dallas Bowl, according to the Oklahoman, so it's unclear who will call the plays for Oklahoma State in that game.
Oklahoma State averaged 44.7 points per game this season, fourth-best in the country, even though it was forced to use three starting quarterbacks this year because of injuries.
Larry Fedora, who was Southern Miss' head coach in 2011 when it went 12-2, was also an Oklahoma State offensive coordinator before becoming the Golden Eagles head coach.
