Reports: Harrison, Bengals not close to deal

The SportsXchange

Linebacker James Harrison was expected to sign a free agent deal with the Cincinnati Bengals this week, but multiple media outlets are reporting that negotiations have hit a snag.

A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that it "does not look like the numbers will work" for the deal. USA Today Sports cited a source that said talks were "not going well."

The Bengals are trying to fill a linebacker spot left by Manny Lawson, a starter last year who signed with the Buffalo Bills during the offseason. Cincinnati has also spoken with free agent linebacker Karlos Dansby.

Harrison, 34, refused to take a pay cut requested by the Steelers last month, and he was waived. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Steelers are not interested in re-signing him.

Harrison missed the first three games last season with a knee injury but came on strong when he returned, tying for the team lead in sacks with six (his fewest since 2007) and leading the NFL's No. 1 ranked defense. The 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year has 64 career sacks.

In 10 seasons with the Steelers, Harrison also forced 29 fumbles and made five interceptions.
