Reports: Ex-boxer Camacho shot in jaw

The SportsXchange

Former world boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho was in critical condition Tuesday after being shot in the jaw, according to Puerto Rican media reports.

Camacho reportedly was a passenger in a car in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, when a gunman fired on the vehicle. The driver was killed in the attack, and Camacho was transported to a San Juan hospital, according to the reports.

The New York Daily News, citing a report from the Primera Hora newspaper, quoted the hospital's medical director as saying a bullet hit Camacho's left jaw, went through his neck and wound up in his right shoulder. Two cervical vertebrae were fractured, though the report didn't mention whether Camacho suffered from paralysis.

Camacho, 50, was born in Bayamon, and he moved to New York City as a youth.

He captured his first world title in 1983 when he defeated Rafael Limon for the vacant WBC junior lightweight championship.

Camacho moved up to the lightweight division, and he beat Jose Luis Ramirez for the WBC crown in 1985.

He went on to capture the light welterweight championship, making him a rare three-division titleholder.

Camacho finished his career 79-6-3, with his first loss coming to Julio Cesar Chavez in 1992. He later beat Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard, and he lost to Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya.
