Reports: Cap-strapped Cowboys may deal Murray
The Dallas Cowboys are projected to be at least $31 million over the 2014 salary cap, according to ESPN.
That would be more than $13 million more than the second-highest figure in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints.
The Cowboys have signed quarterback Tony Romo, linebacker Sean Lee, tight end Jason Witten and wide receiver Miles Austin to lucrative contract extensions, and recently released nose tackle Jay Ratliff will count more than $7 million against next year's salary cap.
An NFL executive described Dallas' cap situation to ESPN as a "train wreck."
The Cowboys will be forced to renegotiate contracts and cut players just to get under the '14 cap, much less sign free agents and their rookie draft class. They are also considering shopping running back DeMarco Murray before the trade deadline.
Murray is due to earn $755,469 in 2014 with a salary cap number of $946,094, and the team is no longer convinced he is a franchise back, according to NFL.com. While Murray entered Sunday eighth in the NFL with 428 rushing yards, he played in only six games last season and now is dealing with a knee injury.
