Reports: Angels' trade of Haren to Cubs is off

The SportsXchange

The trade that was to send pitcher Dan Haren from the Los Angeles Angels to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for reliever Carlos Marmol apparently is off, multiple media outlets reported Friday night.

It had been reported earlier Friday that the deal was done. FOXSports.com was told Marmol, who has a no-trade clause, would have signed off on the trade. However, the Cubs pulled out of the deal at the last minute, although the exact reason is not known.

Earlier Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported the Cubs and Angels were waiting for approval for the trade from Major League Baseball because of money being exchanged as part of the deal.

With the trade off, the Angels were talking to other teams to see whether there is interest in Haren. They must decide by midnight ET Friday whether to exercise Haren's $15.5 million option for 2013.

The Angels apparently were prepared to buy out Haren's option for $3.5 million if they could trade him. He was just 12-13 with a 4.33 earned run average in 2012.

Marmol is scheduled to make $9.8 million next season. He went 3-3 with 3.42 ERA and 20 saves in 2012.
