Reports: Angels sign reliever Burnett

The SportsXchange

The Los Angeles Angels, who dealt away a bullpen mainstay last week, added a reliever Wednesday.

Left-hander Sean Burnett agreed to a two-year deal that includes a team option for a third year, multiple media outlets reported. According to MLB.com, Burnett's deal will pay him more than the $9.5 million, two-year deal that Japanese reliever Kyuji Fujikawa signed with the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Burnett's contract won't be finalized until he passes a physical.

The Angels traded right-handed reliever Jordan Walden to the Atlanta Braves on Friday in exchange for right-handed starter Tommy Hanson.

Burnett, 30, went 1-2 with two saves and a 2.38 ERA in 70 appearances for the Washington Nationals this year. He spent the past 3 1/2 seasons in Washington after playing 2 1/2 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

For his career, he has a 15-23 record with 10 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 354 appearances (13 starts).

Burnett will join Scott Downs in giving Los Angeles two lefty relievers. The Angels recently signed right-hander Ryan Madson to serve as the closer, and right-hander Ernesto Frieri and Kevin Jepsen also could pitch in the late innings.
