Colts WR Wayne has torn ACL

The SportsXchange

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne suffered a season-ending ACL injury from Sunday night's win over the Denver Broncos.

Tests confirmed what the Colts feared late Sunday. Wayne underwent an MRI Monday, but the team was certain his injury was severe.

The Colts are entering their bye week and are expected to add a receiver to the their roster. Wayne has been a picture of durability throughout his career -- he had a league-leading streak of 189 consecutive games played that will end in Week 9 at Houston.

Wayne was injured when he tried to come back on an underthrown pass thrown by quarterback Andrew Luck midway through the fourth quarter. He stayed down for several minutes before getting up and heading to the sideline with the crowd chanting "Reggie, Reggie, Reggie." He finished with five catches for 50 yards.

The loss of the most veteran presence on the offense will be significant.

Darrius Heyward-Bey and T.Y. Hilton would likely start but depth behind them is questionable. LaVon Brazill and David Reed, primarily a return specialist, are the only other receivers on the roster.

Colts general manager Ryan Grigson has been one of the most aggressive personnel men in the NFL and could seek to replace Wayne via trade before the Oct. 29 deadline.

Indianapolis might have interest in Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks or Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, but already Grigson unloaded the team's 2014 first-round pick (to the Browns for Trent Richardson), fourth-rounder (to the Browns for offensive lineman Montori Hughes), seventh-rounder (to the 49ers for defensive end Cam Johnson). Grigson also required Reed from Baltimore via trade, and made swaps for fullback Stanley Havili (from the Eagles for defensive end Clifton Geathers) and linebacker Kelvin Sheppard from the Bills for defensive end Jerry Hughes.

In August 2012, the Colts acquired cornerback Vontae Davis from the Miami Dolphins for second-round pick.
