Report: UNLV's Rice poised to hire Simon as assistant

The SportsXchange

UNLV coach Dave Rice appeared set to hire Findlay Prep coach Todd Simon as an assistant coach, filling the vacancy created when Justin Hardy left the staff for San Diego State in April.

The Las Vegas Sun reported on Monday that Simon was close to returning to the school where he spent two years as the video coordinator under former Rebels coach Lon Krueger. UNLV's human resources department would have to approve the hire, though that is expected to be a formality.

Simon went 35-1 at Findley Prep in 2012-13, his only season as the head coach at the prep powerhouse located in Las Vegas. However, he has been with the program since its inception in 2006, taking over the coaching reigns when Michael Peck left to become an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Anthony Bennett, the former Rebel who was the first pick in last week's NBA Draft, is among seven McDonald's All-Americans Findlay has produced over the last four years.
