An altercation between Michigan State forward Branden Dawson and center Adreian Payne at a hotel in State College, Pa., was under investigation Wednesday by Penn State police.
The incident took place at the Nittany Lion Inn where the Spartans were staying before their Big Ten game Wednesday night against Penn State, according to the Centre County Report and USA Today.
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said in a statement that neither player would start the game.
"A scuffle that began as two players needling each other resulted in a dented wall," Izzo said. "We'll deal with this appropriately, and the players will willingly accept responsibility for paying for any property damage.
"I've spent my entire afternoon meeting with the players involved, and they are both sincerely remorseful. What makes matters even more confusing is that they are off-campus roommates."
According to the reports, after one of the players was shoved against a wall, the police responded but did not arrest anyone.
Michigan State, ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll, was 14-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten entering the game at Penn State.
Dawson is averaging 10.5 points per game and Payne is tied for the team lead in rebounding with a 7.2 per-game average.
