Report: Tigers, C Avila agree on contract

The SportsXchange

Catcher Alex Avila agreed to a one-year contract worth $4.15 million with the Detroit Tigers on Friday.

The Tigers avoided arbitration with Avila in his second year of eligibility. He contract includes a vesting option at $5.4 million for 2015 and a $200,000 buyout clause, the New York Post reported.

The contract becomes vested if Avila makes the 2014 All-Star team, wins a Silver Slugger Award or finishes in the top 15 in American League MVP voting, according to the report.

The 27-year-old Avila requested a contract worth $5.35 million and the Tigers countered with $3.75 million before the deal was reached.

An arm injury and a concussion limited Avila to 102 regular-seasons games last season. In Game 5 of the American League Championship Series in October, Avila was injured again, suffering a strained patellar tendon in a knee after a teammate ran into him at home place.

Avila finished the 2013 season with a .227 batting average, 11 home runs and 47 RBIs. His best year with the Tigers came in 2011 when he batted .295 with 19 homers and 82 RBIs.
