Report: Texans pass on Patriots QB Mallett

The SportsXchange

First-year Houston Texans head coach is passing on familiarity to take a closer look at the four quarterbacks on his current roster.

For now, Houston will not pursue a deal for Ryan Mallett, the New England Patriots quarterback entering the final year of his contract who spent his rookie season as O'Brien's pupil in Foxborough. Mallett, a tall, strong-armed pocket passer, also worked for three seasons under current Houston quarterbacks coach George Godsey.

Mallett, 25, is under contract for 2014 before he can become a free agent in March.

Houston passed on the high-profile quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL Draft, selecting pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney with the first overall pick and offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo in the second round.

The Texans drafted Pittsburgh quarterback Tom Savage with the 135th overall selection, a strong signal that veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick or one of Houston's younger veterans -- Case Keenum and T.J. Yates -- will open the season as the franchise's starter.

Mallett is not assured a roster spot in New England.

Behind Tom Brady, who turns 37 before the start of the regular season, is second-round rookie Jimmy Garoppolo, the team's highest draft pick at the position since 1993 (Drew Bledsoe).

A deal with the Texans could come in training camp, when final roster decisions are made, and Mallett could be at risk of being released.

New England carried only two quarterbacks on the roster in 2013 after releasing Tim Tebow.
