Report: Syracuse will hire Shafer as head coach

Syracuse defensive coordinator Scott Shafer will take over as the Orange's new head coach, CBS Sports reported Monday night.

The report cited an anonymous source.

Syracuse needed a replacement after head coach Doug Marrone left earlier Monday to accept the job as the Buffalo Bills' head coach.

Shafer, 46, joined the Orange as defensive coordinator in 2009, the same year Marrone took over as head coach. Syracuse ranked seventh in the nation in total defense in 2010, 44th this year.

Prior to joining Syracuse, Shafer had stints as the defensive coordinator for Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Stanford and Michigan. He played quarterback in the 1980s for Ohio University and Baldwin-Wallace.

Shafer has no head-coaching experience, but neither did Marrone when he took over at Syracuse. Marrone led the Orange to a 25-25 record and two bowl appearances in four seasons.
